Frequently Asked Questions

Starting therapy often comes with uncertainties. Below are some of the questions people most commonly ask before getting in touch.

If you don’t see your question here, you are very welcome to contact us.

Do we attend couples therapy together?

In most cases, yes. Meeting together allows us to understand your dynamic in real time and support both partners in feeling heard.

Occasionally, individual sessions may be offered alongside the work if this seems helpful, but the focus remains on the relationship.

What if my partner is unsure about coming?

This is extremely common.

Many people arrive feeling hesitant or worried about being blamed. Therapy is not about deciding who is right or wrong - it is about understanding patterns and creating safer ways to communicate.

If it helps, you are welcome to begin by reaching out and discussing these concerns with us.

What happens in the first session?

The first meeting is a chance to explore what has brought you to therapy and what you hope might change.

Your therapist will ask some questions, but there is no pressure to tell your story perfectly. We help guide the conversation.

You can also use this time to decide whether the space feels right for you.

How much do sessions cost?

Individual Counselling is £60 while couples counselling is £80 per 50-minute session.

We confirm all details when arranging your first appointment.

How long does therapy last?

There is no fixed length.

Some couples or individuals come for a few months to work on a particular issue. Others stay longer to deepen understanding and maintain progress.

We review this together as therapy unfolds.

Is everything confidential?

Yes. Sessions are private and confidential.

There are a small number of legal and ethical exceptions related to serious risk of harm, which your therapist will explain at the start of the work.

What if we are in crisis or need urgent help?

Reconnect Scotland is not a crisis service.

If you or someone else is at immediate risk of harm, please contact emergency support right away by calling 999.

You can also reach:

  • NHS 24 on 111

  • Samaritans on 116 123 (free, 24/7)

  • or speak with your GP for urgent advice.

If the situation feels difficult but not immediate, you are very welcome to contact us.

How often will we meet?

Most clients attend weekly or fortnightly, especially at the beginning. Regular sessions help build momentum and allow change to develop more steadily.

Do you offer online sessions?

Yes. Some of our therapists work online, while in-person appointments are available from our Leith location. Availability can vary depending on who you are working with.

How do I get started?

Simply send us a message through the enquiry form. Let us know a little about what has been happening and whether you are looking for in-person or online sessions.

We aim to reply within 24 hours.
